Lecture 19
Destiny of Life

Often we make a decision to go in
a direction contra to our destiny and
nothing works out or falls into place.

Destiny of life means the destination of life. By our destiny, we head for a given destination. However, by free will we can and do from time to time alter our course of life.

When we come into this life, our habit pattern is fully determined. The purpose of life is to change the bad habits as much as possible, and to project and build on our good habits.

As a human, we are a composite of both good and bad. In many cases, the bad far outweighs the good, and this makes for a hard life. The purpose of life is to improve ourselves as much as possible, and this is evolution. Evolution is ever so slow because humans always attempt to maintain the status quo. And the general attitude is to adjust to one's faults and go along through life making as few waves as possible.

Nature, being fully aware of this attitude, usually places us in a life situation where by epoch and pressure we are forced to change some of our greater faults, because to maintain them becomes too painful and too great a burden to bear.

Life offers all forms of pain and painful situations, so we can realize without too much insight that a change in our attitudes is necessary in order to release us from a great deal of our unnecessary pain. So, slowly we do change and this is also evolution.

What we learn is that happiness comes with right thinking, speaking, and doing, and pain comes with wrong doing. We learn that when we project love, we are in turn loved and when we project hate we are shunned by most all who can avoid us, and those who can't, chalk it up to their own bad karma and hope for the day when their karma will change.

Little by little we learn that when we are good, the world is good. As the saying of old goes, laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone.

Because separation is painful, and isolation is misery, we soon learn that we need good companions in order to weather the ups and downs of life, and this is where discrimination comes into our life.

Our destiny in this life is generally determined by our karma and dharma. Karma is the action of life and all of the lessons to be learned. Dharma is the way we should live our life in order to gain the most from life. This is where the word duty comes predominately into focus. Dharma means to live our life according to our destiny or according to our duty.

We have often heard duty comes before all except before God. This means that in order to work out our karma, we must meet our responsibilities as they confront us and not try and postpone them.

The greatest problem we encounter is trying to handle someone else's problem, inadvertently or on purpose, and this can pose a problem that most often defies solution. This is mainly because it is not in our destiny pattern and we are not equipped to cope with the ramifications of such problems not of our making. That is why it is said that when we go to help someone, we had better be sure we are able to help them and not add to their problem and compound their already heavy burdens, as well as our own.

This is why we should use our reasoning mind and reason out our course of destiny, so that life will flow and not become a series of stops and jerks. The main problem is that we do not know what it is we were meant to do, yet in another sense we do know and have always known.

Often we make a decision to go in a direction contra to our destiny and nothing works out or falls into place. When this happens, it is a sure sign that we cannot be on the right track, and therefore, we should alter our course. Very few do, and many pursue the wrong course clear to the grave and even after that are seldom convinced that they were in error.

All this may seem to be useless, and futile, but this is exactly how we learn to use our God-given faculties, and by trial and error and hard lessons learned we ultimately gain divine mind which means full use of our reasoning mind. Many say, if there were a just God, he would not allow suffering. There is a just God, and he has nothing to do with it. It is our own doing. We have free will and how we use it makes all the difference in the world.

Like children, we must learn, and like children, we also come of age. Then and then only has destiny run its course down the halls of time, and we have at long last reached our destination. We have become a pillar in the everlasting temple and we will no longer go out.

Lecture 20
Love, a True Expression of Life

Anyone wishing to use a barometer to measure his
degree of development has only to gauge his own
quality and quantity of love as his barometer and he
will know exactly where he is on the scale of life.

Love runs the gamut from love of food to the love of God, and this encompasses humanity from pole to pole. Love is a vibration denoting God at its highest frequency and scales on down in relativity of matter to its common denominator. Any individual at any level of life is capable of expressing opposites in any facet of life. However, some express the negative more often than the positive. At any given level of consciousness in the physical world, the opposites expressed are greater or less, according to the level of consciousness being lived. Human love at its lowest level is expressed as passion, both physical as well as mental. Love expressed through low physical passion with little or no consideration for the other's feelings lacks in sensibilities. But love at a higher physical expression exhibits great consideration for the partner's feelings and a desire to please. The physical relationship also moves from being animalistic to one of loving care.

Love for different things also is expressed in different modes; love of country, love of possessions, mother's love for a child, and so forth. None is expressed in the same way. Each has its own individual quality of expression, yet it is love. At a low level of consciousness one is quick to express extremes and quick to change feelings, because little or no understanding exists. Such people most always reason from a conclusion instead of to a conclusion. Also, stability in their character is missing. As one grows in consciousness the expression of love turns to a higher and higher expression. No longer is there selfishness; some consideration for others creeps into the person's psyche. A person showing a modicum of love in one aspect of life may show none in other aspects. So, love runs the gamut through all the levels of consciousness, from total selfishness to selflessness. However, in between is a vast gap, a field of garbled expression. However, where love is instilled in a child at an early age, this follows him through all of his life. It is said, where one has love for his mother, he will also have love for his wife and children and others.

Love is a force or vibration that sustains the universe. “God is love” is an expression of the highest conceivable vibration in and beyond creation. Love is a positive emotion or vibration that increases in intensity as one evolves. Love causes the negative emotions of life to fall away. One's expression is determined by where and on what and to what degree they put their attention. Positive emotions and selfless expressions of love are natural human expressions and place no tension on anyone, while negative expressions put one under great stress and tension.

One of the great problems of life is that one believes that what he desires is good for the mere reason that he desires it. Such thinking is a fallacy and it is a broken rung on the ladder of life that will not sustain or support anyone who places his weight on it. Life is complex, and it is often very hard to know the good from the evil, because evil has a way of disguising itself as good. We discover the deception and the truth of the situation after we have undergone a bad experience. Hopefully, due to our lack of discrimination we learned a valuable lesson. Yet, it is amazing how so many can experience so much and yet learn so little.

Everyone wants to be happy, except maybe those who, deluded, believe they are happy in their misery. True happiness is an outgoing expression of love; a selfless giving without expecting a return. While love is the true expression of one's self, it is not something that is sloppy or mushy; it is a quality of great strength and of great endurance. God's love for His human children is a love of the highest quality and of inconceivable endurance. Love is also all-encompassing: it is gentleness, yet it is firmness; it is giving, yet doing so wisely; it is helping, yet not meddling; it is devotion, yet not fanaticism; it is adoration, yet not being possessive. Love is many things, and in its highest expression it is all things.

As we evolve in consciousness we also grow in love. Love becomes an outpouring of divine qualities. Anyone wishing to use a barometer to measure his degree of development has only to gauge his own quality and quantity of love as his barometer and he will know exactly where he is on the scale of life. Many claiming to be highly developed and highly spiritual still do many unloving things to others and this shows exactly where they really are in spirituality.

The infusion of the Being through our practice of Transcendental Meditation is really the infusion of love and the infusion into ourselves of our divine qualities. This is love. Love as an expression of divinity does not have to be declared by anyone, because it automatically radiates from one. Now, each spoken word is an expression of love and each act is an act of love. So love is the true goal of life because love is eternal. When all else has vanished, love alone will remain in its resplendent glory. Before one can ever hope to stand erect in the light or become eternal or godlike, one must become a living expression of his own highest quality, and this is love and this is also God.

Lecture 21
Effort and Effects in Life

The human, being of free will, can at anytime he wishes,
change his course in life for better or for worse.

Anything that is accomplished in life, especially in the field of self-improvement or evolvement, is done at great effort by anyone dedicated to self-development. It does not come easy, and for a marked degree of development there must be great devotion. This is true of great musicians, artists, athletes, leaders, and so forth.

The human, being of free will, can at anytime he wishes, change his course in life for better or for worse. However, the dominant nature of change is always for improvement. The human goes through evolutionary stages of development; first where all concern is for personal survival, then for personal gain and then for spiritual gain. These stages are also the modes of life; the modes of ignorance, passion, and goodness. The process of evolution is a slow period of development during which the human must constantly improve his body and his mind. All are caught up in degrees of consciousness that run the gamut from ignorance to enlightenment, and the key to this is the fact that consciousness is tied to the body. Density is low consciousness and purity is high consciousness.

The human is a replica of this planet and he has and is affected by the same forces or energies. So, the human emotions and the human deeds make a marked impression upon the planetary energy field and as a result evoke a given response in various degrees and of various manifestations because the earth is also attempting to restore balance. As a result, we have various types of natural disturbances such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, fires, storms, and so forth. It is nature throwing off the negativity that is created by the humans.

The thoughts and deeds of humans are charges of energy that penetrate the great ocean of energy, and which also build cloudy formations around the earth. When such formations or charges of energy reach a certain level of power, they cause great constructive or destructive effect upon the earth and upon the people on the earth. This affects the solar system as well; if our earth does not keep up in evolution, it slows down the progress of the solar system. Another thing, when human emotions run rampant on a destructive course it not only affects the atmosphere, but it also affects our health as well. All is interconnected right on up to the highest kingdom. When any one group riots, causes a war, or generates a great negative reaction in the world, a charged cloud of negative energy is formed which must be released. And when this is finished, balance or peace is then restored. Wars usually start with a big explosion and then just phase out after the energy is dissipated.

A human is born with a certain amount of energy and this can be dissipated through excessive sex, or it can be channeled into higher creativity, whichever one chooses. If he chooses to stand on a higher plane he can measurably increase his energy. When you reach a certain level of attainment in life the source of energy is inexhaustible, but this has to be a level where one does not use the energy for personal pleasures or benefits. Sexual energy is a very vital part of human life because it creates vitality and sensitivity in the brain, creativity in the mind, an impression in the aura and has a healing and magnetic effect on the body. When this energy is wasted on a mass scale, such as was done in Rome, Greece, Egypt and now America, an imbalance in creative energies results, which then causes the fall of such a nation. Many nations and many groups have fallen just this way.

There are times or cycles when new energies are poured out onto the earth and these energies provide great opportunities for human progress and higher initiations for the people. Also, with the in-pouring of these energies come crises cycles and these must be handled wisely to preserve the balance here on earth. The energy coming into the earth is impersonal, but it can be destructive according to the nature of the people, or the nature of the thought forms produced by the thinking of the people. If there is a great amount of negativity among the people, either of a nation or of the world, a world war or a local war is the result. If the incoming energies contact positive thinking on the part of the people, then there is a surge of love felt in the world and creativity and harmony on earth is experienced. So, our thoughts play an important part in the world activity whether we know it or not. Nature is certainly aware of this and the flowers putting forth their fragrance and the birds singing their melodious songs have a neutralizing effect on negative emotions and thoughts in the atmosphere. It is also said that it is the birds singing in the gardens that open the channels to the kingdoms of the Devas. Also, flowers in the garden around a home purify the atmosphere around that house. Further, a city that has beautiful parks filled with the songs of birds and the fragrance of flowers is a much purer city for having such parks.

People need to be out in nature more because it has a very uplifting effect and puts one in touch with the Devas and the elemental forces of nature. In the Middle Ages, when they had the walled-in cities, disease and plagues were very common because of the containment of all the accumulated negativity in such a city. In the coming New Age, living will be in airy, open type houses in a park setting of great beauty. If we continue to poison the air we breathe and pollute our streams, rivers, and oceans, we will produce great negativity in the world and open the door for the dark destructive forces to occupy our earth.

The human controls all of this, so he should be aware of his responsibility. The answer to all of this is to begin to know and experience God and to acquire a spiritual nature. By doing this, love will predominate on this earth and the world will be uplifted and purified as well, without the earth having to resort to destructive means in order to rid itself of destructive, negative humans. We must also realize that color, music, lovely fragrance, laughter, joy, happiness, and love are all uplifting vibrations that neutralize negativity in the world. Also, it keeps the spirits of the humans high and does not allow depressions to overtake human emotions.

If possible, one should have a bedroom facing east so one can be awakened by the morning sun, and a living room facing the setting sun. All of this has a profound effect upon everyone. No one should ever sleep below the ground level or have houses with dark depressing colors if one is on the spiritual path.

Many people feel that when a natural calamity is visited upon them that they are being punished by God, but this is not true. It is only nature restoring the equilibrium disturbed by humanity.

Subtle nature from time-to-time releases great bursts of energy upon the earth. Sunspots are one example. And according to the state of human consciousness this becomes either a very uplifting creative force or a very destructive force in the world, according to how it is received. How and where one is in consciousness determines the type of vibrations one emits into the atmosphere and collectively this has a profound effect on all of nature as well as on humanity.

If we are to become immune to all the negativity in the world we must surround ourselves with a protective shield of God, that is, a higher vibration and an aura of love. This is what the scriptures mean when they say, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” For it is love that gives life, creates harmony in the world, gives unity and molds us into the light. And it is separateness and hate that lowers all vibrations and sows the seeds of destruction in the world.

When one is cheerful, understanding, and positive, no matter what the circumstances one finds oneself in, then one is naturally attuned to God and is a light in this world for God. And God functions through such a person. As meditators we are an uplifting force in this world and every time we meditate we send out into the surrounding atmosphere high positive vibrations which have a profound effect for good.

Lecture 22
Decisions in Life

Transcendental Meditation is the best way to
change all of our undesirable habits because the
infusion of the Being gives us insight, and insight
is the main thing we need to change anything.

One of our major and constant activities is making decisions. Some decisions we make are of our own choosing, but many others are forced upon us. The most important aspect of making decisions is that as often as possible they should be right decisions. Right decisions usually conclude an issue, but wrong decisions call for more and more decisions in order to rectify the mistake of the initial decision. Some decisions are irrevocable and once they are made they cannot be retracted. So, it is very important in these cases that the decisions are well thought out and not hastily made. In our case where we are developing intuition through our practice of Transcendental Meditation the decisions are still there to be made, but so are the right answers.

Good and bad decisions sometimes shape our future for lifetimes to come. A wrong decision in early life can ruin a life from that point on. Likewise, some decisions made in early life can lead to a life of happiness and fulfillment. In making decisions one might wonder how much is based on karma, how much on destiny and circumstances, how much on attitude and free will, how much is well thought out and how much is off the top of the head and how much of our emotions cloud our reason.

Since we must make many decisions it is a good idea for us to be equipped to make the decisions both for ourselves and also where others are affected. This is why at an early age we should be taught to develop a sense of responsibility and take seriously what is serious in life, especially where it calls for a dramatic change in life. Karma has much to do with the decisions we make for ourselves even though we do not realize it at the time. According to our karma and dharma we are meant to go a certain direction in life, work out certain karmic patterns and fulfill certain dharma. Most of this is unknown to us at the time.

Our karma places us in a situation that is conducive to making certain decisions. However, at the time we make a decision the reason is obscure to us. Nevertheless, there is a given subconscious projection on the screen of the conscious mind urging us in a given direction and this is our dharma working for us. In certain decisions we make we feel right about making them, while other decisions leave us with feelings of misgiving and doubts. Usually when there is doubt, such decisions do not turn out right. In most cases if one would listen, one's conscience would guide them correctly.

Decisions are a part of the responsibilities of life. We must face them the same as any other responsibilities, because decisions that are right relieve us of many responsibilities and problems in life and wrong decisions only compound our problems. We cannot go through life trying to limit the amount of decisions we make. What is necessary is that as a problem or situation presents itself to us we must or should at that point make the best decision possible. Sometimes it may be a split-second decision and often that correct decision saves our life. Sometimes we may have a long time to make a decision. However, in long term decisions the issue often becomes clouded and we lose the impact and the importance of making the decision in the first place.

Life, however, has a strange way of putting us in a position where we are forced ultimately to make a decision one way or the other. If we get a clear insight into what we want to do in life and where we wish to go then decisions come easier than when we have no idea of what we wish to do or where we wish to go. Everyone has an aptitude for something and doing that something gives them pleasure and a feeling of accomplishment. Some find pleasure in doing hard manual labor, while others only find pleasure in doing creative mental labor. Some find pleasure and fulfillment in doing some of both. A combination of the two makes for a more balanced life than one extreme or the other.

Many decisions we make are mental conclusions based on knowledge and experience as well as the nature of our character. Some decisions are forced on us and we must rely on our knowledge and experience for a correct decision. If we have no knowledge or experience we should seek out someone who has and get expert advice from them. However, this presents a serious defect in some people. They must, for their ego's sake, feel that they are all-knowing and incapable of making a bad decision; hence you have a fool in action. Down through history many costly mistakes and blunders have been made by such individuals. The Charge of the Light Brigade is an example. Jonestown is another more recent example. What is even worse is to make a bad decision and in the face of good corrective advice ride it out to a disaster. The Titanic is a classic example of this and there are thousands of such cases.

The higher we climb on the ladder of life the more critical our decisions become, because most often they affect the lives of countless people, and even so of a nation or the world. Our decisions at this point become very critical and carry an enormous overwhelming responsibility.

When a nation or the world comes to a crisis, often a man of destiny appears who has been endowed with the ability to make right decisions and most of all to stand behind his decisions when many others declare them to be wrong. It is important that when we make decisions that involve others they should not be selfish decisions. The feelings of others should be considered and that makes for a happier life for all concerned. We should also live a planned existence and not a life of fright and surprise. We should have certain goals in mind and work toward them and not allow ourselves to just drift. And, we should always remember that the means do not always justify the ends. Also, we should make decisions where we do not create situations we cannot control and which wind up controlling us and we find that our freedom of choice has been eroded.

Some people continually make bad decisions and most often this is due to their habit pattern; they are in the habit of making poor decisions and one bad decision leads to another. Obviously they should set about to correct or alter their habit pattern and stop following the deep ruts made during previous trips here on earth. The best way to break a habit pattern is to first recognize that there is a particular pattern we have and then earnestly desire to change it.

Transcendental Meditation is the best way to change our bad habits because the infusion of the Being gives us insight, and insight is the main thing we need to change anything. Physically to try to wrench ourselves out of our ruts is nearly impossible. We need divine guidance and divine strength which we only acquire through an established contact with the divine. When this is done our decisions become effective because we have clear insight not obscured by surface emotion and lack of inner strength. The best decision we can make in this or any life is to step onto the spiritual path and stop functioning from the surface level of life and living on the rim of the wheel. By stepping onto the spiritual path we begin to develop our real strength and wisdom which is our true inner nature.

In the final analysis, we are mind and the mind requires stimulation, and decisions keep the mind alert and active. Often mental agility and fast decisions keep us alive, such as in driving a car or flying an airplane. Many decisions we make are automatic based on training and experience. Some decisions tax our mind to full capacity and call for all of the knowledge, experience, and depth of mind that we can muster. Decisions are with us from the cradle to the grave. So, let us be equipped as best we are able. Let us continue to connect our mind by our daily practice of Transcendental Meditation to a higher mind and receive divine assistance in life's problem-prone and decision-ridden lesson world. All decisions are based on one end conclusion and that is to find happiness in life.

Lecture 23

Many would rather die with their
faults than die trying to correct them.

To sin means to do anything that would hinder, harm, or hurt anyone on their path to fulfillment, whether by deed, word or by thought. To sin against ourselves is a lesser crime than sinning against others. How we earn our living has great karmic overtones in life. Also of great importance is the mode of life we live; one of goodness or one of evil; a life of selflessness or one of selfishness and greed with disregard to all except our own heedless desires. To lead a productive life rather than a destructive life is to lead the good life. This means that what supports you should also support others and nature as well. The object of life is to live as free from sin as is possible, to live in compliance with universal laws. Universal law gives support to all who support the law and strikes down those who do not support the law.

It is said that we are born in sin, but actually we are born surrounded by sin. Our nature, which is fully formed at birth, must be changed to conform to the principle that underlies all of creation. Many people feel that anything that they really enjoy is sinful. This is not so. It is only a matter of what we identify with or where we place our attention. In life there are two poles, the negative and the positive and at this level of density of matter the negative has the greater pull and greater glamour. In our struggle to maintain balance in life we are forever pulled to the negative and are in a constant struggle to move toward the positive or good side of life and stay there. As the Bible says, “and man is sorely tempted.” What we find is that of ourselves we can do nothing. Where there is a genuine desire to decrease our sins or reduce our karmic load, if we turn within and to higher guidance, we can overcome. Many blame their sins on the devil as some mysterious personage that constantly entices them into evil deeds. Devil simply means to swim against the force of evolution. We can only do this for a certain period of time and then we are swept back into the current of progress by the weight of our own misdeeds. Also, Satan means a tremendous satanic force that bears on us with unresolved karma that must now be resolved.

We as humans create habit patterns that become deeply engrained in us. As a result we almost automatically do the same things over and over again, often against our will which is not strong enough. When we finally learn not to do the wrong action any longer, the habit is broken. However, we are not just the victim of one bad habit, but rather many habits acquired over many ages. Our goal in life is to improve ourselves and thus fall away from the things that would further bind us rather than free us. In religion it has always been pointed out that by good deeds we go to heaven and by bad deeds we go to hell. This means to go where we enjoy the fruit of our good deeds, or to go where we suffer out our bad deeds. All are weighed in the balance and many are found wanting.

If we sin and are truly sorry and ask for forgiveness, we will be forgiven. If we recognize the fault and we are willing to correct it, the saying is true, “Though your sins are as black as night, in an instant they can be washed as white as snow.” Many would rather die with their faults than die trying to correct them.

Nobody can be expected to correct all their bad habits overnight, but a start in that direction is a great change in attitude and slowly one becomes a better person. The purpose of life is to learn the lessons of life and graduate from human life and not to destroy the school we are in and many of those in the school. For such ill deeds we will spend all of our vacation time helping to rebuild the school and at the same time suffering the same anguish we perpetuated upon our fellow humans.

We know that the human is a thinking being, in a given level of consciousness, and to attain a divine status is his destiny. He evolves gradually through myriad levels of consciousness to attain divine consciousness. The human is peculiar because in him is the beast, the man, and the God nature. He is bound by forces far stronger than he is. His true nature is happiness, yet he is beset with problems that cause him misery and suffering. He eventually learns that he must be sacrificed on his own cross of materiality in order to gain spirituality. Yet, it is the inner knowing that gives him strength to persevere. He knows that the struggle in life is to become free. Realization of the Self is not an overnight process; rather it is a long process of overcoming. The one thing necessary is to get onto the path; go within and then what are needed above all else are patience, faith, and love. With these, the light will come, for all who have faith in God, they will see God.

Patience is a soul force and through patience and determination we steadily gain strength of purpose of mind and body. What we must work toward in life is purity. Through our practice of Transcendental Meditation we slowly gain purity because the infusion of the Being from our continued practice gradually overshadows the relative and the darkness vanishes in the light of the eternal Being. Then, the beast and the man are gone and only the God-man remains in bliss and eternal life.

Lecture 24
Spiritual Enlightenment

We have to move from the known toward that which is now
unknown and we do this through Transcendental Meditation.
In this internal spiritual practice we automatically and totally
eliminate all of the delusions and the abnormalities that exist
in the mind. Then what reflects is pure consciousness.

To gain spiritual enlightenment one must find a means to liberate or free the consciousness from its restricting and binding force. The force of nature is to keep us bound. The more we become addicted to the false glamour of matter, the greater becomes the bondage. No two people respond to anything in life to the same degree. So, no two people are attracted to or stuck to matter to the same degree; some more, some less. However, all do become stuck.

In the process of involution, consciousness became bound to the lower worlds of matter; a world of illusions and constrictions. We became constricted or bound because of the impact of sensation and base desires. The more we became hung up in matter, the greater was the obscurity of consciousness. The prime cause of this bondage was the newly acquired individuality, or the lower self. The real or higher Self remains infinite and eternally free. But, through the mysterious process of involution a part of itself came into the deepest levels of matter and lost its true identity and became bound as a finite creature of time and space, locked into a seemingly endless series of bodies each for a given period of incarnation. This switch from higher consciousness (higher Self) to lower consciousness (lower self) caused us to forge the chain of our own bondage. That chain as we have learned can be of heavy iron or can be a gold chain as we so desire. But in either case we are not free of the chain.

After many ages we have come to a place in evolution where the issue is to become liberated; we come to a point of recognition when we realize that there must be some means whereby we can unlock our chains and become free. So many ways and means and diverse paths are offered as solutions to free us from our chains; some good, many, however, not so good.

The chains are representative of the wheel of birth and death; the wheel that has twelve signs or segments that are also known as the twelve labors of the soul. Each segment or sign presents numerous and definite lessons for us to learn and master, both as a male and as a female. The lessons presented in each sign become more difficult as one continues to grow in consciousness, or as one evolves. However, no human is ever given a lesson in life greater than his ability to master the lesson. So, excuses for failure are not too valid.

Obviously no individual could in one cycle of the wheel master the numerous lessons of the wheel. One turn of the wheel equals twenty-five thousand years. So, around and around we go. This is why it is said that evolution is ever so slow. It takes a long time to learn all that is necessary to be learned, and then through experience and knowledge to learn to balance ourselves in the school of life.

The ego, or lower self, continues to learn and experience age upon age under all types of circumstances and conditions of life. The lessons learned or virtues gained are then absorbed by the higher Self. If one lives a life where no progress is made or no lessons are learned, then the higher Self is unable to absorb anything of any value. So, this becomes a lost or wasted life. Then, in ensuing lives things become much harder because not only are we forced to keep up with our own class, so to speak, we must also make up what we previously failed to learn. This is why all spiritual masters coming to the earth delineate certain laws of living. By living the laws we smoothly progress in our evolution. By not living the laws we make the way very hard for ourselves.

So, life is hard and life is cruel as so many say, failing to recognize the fact that the life they live is of their own making. Generally people blame everyone and everything else and do not lay the blame at its true source, themselves.

The multiplicity of life is such that we have identified with numerous aspects of the external; such as the physical body, the astral body, the emotions, the senses, the intellect, various temporary conditions, roles being played, and so forth. All tendencies up to this point taken together represent much distortion which has set up a vicious cycle that has hindered the expression of higher consciousness through the lower physical vehicle.

When we reach a certain point of development we slowly begin to shift our consciousness inward, toward the center of reality. Until that point we have been identifying with that which is external and has no lasting substance. In doing this we have kept ourselves securely bound to the outer limits of the wheel. In order to spin off the wheel we have to reverse ourselves on the wheel. We have to begin to focus our attention on the internal and gradually phase away from the external. In so doing we learn that the external aspect of human life is that which is not a part of our real Self.

We have to move from the known toward that which is unknown and we do this through Transcendental Meditation. In this internal spiritual practice, as the Being begins to overshadow everything of a material nature, we automatically and gradually eliminate all of the delusions and the abnormalities that exist in the mind. Then what reflects is pure consciousness. A radical physical wrenching away from material life is not necessary and is generally impossible anyway. Instead, through Transcendental Meditation the gradual process of the subtle infusion of the Being into the mind and the body takes care of everything. As a result our lives take on a new meaning.

Through the continued daily practice of Transcendental Meditation we become more and more an instrument through which action is being done. We become agents of the highest power that now works through us. As we express more and more of the Being (the eternal, the essence, the oneness) we find that the ego has now vanished in our daily activity. In its place stands the real and true Self. Not only has the ego gone, but the wheel and chains have also dropped away. Our actions in life no longer bind us. We are now free and we now know that God is both personal and impersonal, and while for so many ages we have believed we were victims of life, we now know that we are masters of life. We have earned our eternal status.
