Words From the Heart: Quotes from H.H. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

  • 1959 seminar of Spiritual Luminaries,
    in Madras, India:
“I reviewed these two years' experience in India—north, south, east, and west—and said that this Transcendental Meditation is such a simple thing, and it is found to be producing effects in all parts of India. In each province, the living values are completely different. So when in this small area of the world where the cultures are different it has produced these effects, why can't we spiritually regenerate the whole world through this technique”? -Maharishi

  • “The divinity of the Heaven dwells in our hearts as love. Love in the heart of man is the shrine of God on Earth. Blessed are those who carry the shrine of God in fullness of love in their hearts”. -Maharishi

  • December 24, 1961 seminar:
“When silence functions, it is beyond any speech, it is beyond any action, it is spontaneous. It is the spontaneous function of silence. Everything comes to our lap; everything comes to our lap in the waves of thought, in the waves of our understanding, in the waves of realization”. -Maharishi

  • Also, from the same lecture, Maharishi on “God”:
“From the window of my heart
The Light of Thine Altar shines.
From the window of my heart
The Light of Thine Altar comes.
    It comes, it comes
    My Lord
    And spreads around
    Illumines the earth and sky
It brightens the sun and the moon
It blesses man and the angels too.
The earth and the heavens enjoy
    Thy Glory that shines
Thy Glory that shines in full”.

(This poem and much more can be found in Maharishi's book: “Love and God”, originally published in 1965 by SRM Publications, Oslo, Norway)

  • November 15, 1973 lecture in Buffalo, New York:
“Maturity develops as the awareness gains the ability to comprehend a larger field of experience. This growth of comprehension is an expression of the natural tendency of life, which is to grow and expand. Through the Transcendental Meditation Technique awareness expands to its unbounded value, and this unbounded awareness is a fully matured awareness”. -Maharishi

  • “A mature mind is a stable mind, and stability is based on flexibility. Since life is always changing, one must be very stable and flexible in order for life to be most progressive”. -Maharishi

  • “Meditation is making research into yourself, and into the subtler fields of activity. Day after day we culture our minds with the deep silence of our own Being. This is not the silence of a stone, but creative silence. We have to find it for ourselves. We decrease activity until silence becomes creative, and we sit in creative silence and close the gates of perception for insight into the content of life.” -Maharishi

  • “There is nothing in the cosmos, either in the material plane or the spiritual plane which cannot be directly cognized.” -Maharishi

  • “The search for total knowledge starts from the Self and finds fulfillment in coming back to the Self, finding that everything is the expression of the Self - everything is the expression of my own Self.” -Maharishi

  • “Problems are not solved on the level of problems. Analyzing a problem to find its solution is like trying to restore freshness to a leaf by treating the leaf itself, whereas the solution lies in watering the root... When the problem of suffering - physical or mental - has to be tackled, it must be tackled at the root cause in order to produce lasting results. The cause of all causes in life is Being and the different planes of individual life.” -Maharishi

  • “Ideal relationship is based on giving.” -Maharishi

  • “It is right not to harm anyone and wrong to do harm. It is right to see good in others and wrong to see bad in anyone. It is right to love people and wrong to hate them. It is right to admire men for the good in them and wrong to rebuke them for their shortcomings and bad behavior. It is right to give advice to a man if he is doing wrong and wrong not to advise him to do good. It is right to do things which will be helpful to oneself and others and it is wrong to do things which will harm others. It is right to speak the truth but wrong to speak words which will harm others even if they are the truth. It is right to be good to others and wrong to be unpleasant to anyone.” -Maharishi
